What People Ask About Traffic School
How much time do you have to take traffic school in Florida?
In Florida, once you get a ticket, you have 30 days to pay the fine to the county clerk of court. After payment and selecting a traffic school provider, you're given 60 to 120 days (depending on the county) to finish your course and submit your Traffic School Certificate back to the clerk.
How do I elect traffic school (defensive driving school) in Florida?
Every county clerk follows their own procedure, but most offer an affidavit form to choose traffic school when paying your ticket. If you pay your fine and do not elect traffic school, you will receive the points for the violation and your case will be closed.
How do you get points removed from your Driving Record?
Points cannot be removed from your driving record in Florida. Points can be avoided by electing traffic school when you pay your fine.
How long is the Traffic School Course for a ticket?
The Basic Driver Improvement Course takes four hours.
How do I know that I qualify for online traffic school?
The basic driver improvement course (BDI) can be taken for speeding tickets and moving violations. You can only take online traffic school once in a 12-month period and five times in your life.
If I am 18 or older and have never held a driver's license, do I need to get a learners permit first?
If you are 18 or older you are not required to hold a learner's permit. You can immediately apply for an unrestricted driver's license.
You still must do the following:
- Complete the DATA Course
- Pass the Permit Test (at a local FLHSMV office)
- Pass the road test (behind the wheel test)
If I get a second ticket in a 12-month period, can I take a traffic school course to avoid points?
The FLHSMV restricts you to one four-hour basic driver improvement course every 12 months. However, counties like Miami-Dade offer an alternative: an eight-hour Intermediate Traffic School for a second ticket within that period. You can opt for this extended course if you're not eligible for the shorter one.
